>> vanessa family was 19, just finished her freshman year of college when she was stabbed to death inside her car leaving fairfax county shopping center afternoon of june 27th, 2010. >> i'm really sorry. i didn't know. it wasn't me. i didn't mean to hurt anybody never in my life i hurt nobody. >> jurors heard garcia tell investigators after his arrest that he killed her after she agreed to give him and his daughter a ride from the shopping center that day. >> he used the child as a ruse acted like bato get in the car and in my view he got in the car pulled that knife abducted her and taking her to that remote area probably to rape her and she faught him and he killed her. >> that was fairfax county commonwealth attorney raymond morrow around 9:00 tonight when
everything wrapped up. vanessa pham's friends were there and they didn't want to say anything. >> we know the jury has made it's recommendation. what happens next? >> it's a recommendation. the judge has called everybody back into court in mid-november where she will begin imposing the sentence. she can go lower than the 49 years just not higher. >> bob barnard with the latest. thank you. >> now to breaking news in prince george's county. sky fox live over the scene. a woman was hit and killed here this evening. it happened just before 10:00 as the woman was walking along the eastbound lanes of route 202 right near route 50 in landover, maryland. you can see sky fox over the scene there. you can see what appears to be parts of a car possibly scattered across the roadway there. we're continuing to follow this story.
it looks like several lanes are blocked off. we'll keep you posted on any new developments. >> a teenager is in critical condition after being hit by a car in montgomery county. sky fox was over the scene earlier on beers mill road in rockville. police say the 14-year-old suffered facial and skull fractures the driver stayed on the zino word if any charges will be filed. >> a neighborhood is in shock tonight after this community activist was gunned down in southeast. police say timothy dawkins was shot and killed around 7:30 on 4th street. friends say the 24-year-old father had studied to become a minister. >> he was very different. he went to seminary school when he was gone -- 21. he got married when he was 21. he was a positive young man in the community and had a bright future. >> dawkins was married and had a 2-year-old son. his family is making funeral arrangements.
>> new tonight at 11:00. two years after a football player sustained a fatal head injury his family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the ncaa. he collapsed and died six days later from severe head trauma. according to court documents his parents cited reckless disregard for player health and safety in their son's death. they claim the team's running back coach lead with their head. also named were other coaches and the helmet manufacturer. >> prince william county police need your help catching a pair of burglars caught on camera. take a look. this shows two people smashing into the front glass corridor. within seconds they break into the register and make off with the cash. the pair is also responsible for a series of commercial robberies
over the weekend. someone tried to rob 13 businesses in prince william county. >> in fairfax county f.b.i. needs your help to catch a serial bank robber. the beacon hill bandit robbed the bank four times and used the same m.o. he walked into the bank talking on a cell phone demanded cash from the teller and then took off. >> some of the other big stories making national headlines tonight. police in georgia release the 911 calls from tuesday school's shooting the school's bookkeeper is being hailed a hero for keeping the shooter calm. >> he just went outside and started shooting. >> get somewhere self. >> yeah.

mr. chuck brown the god father of go-go has been gone for a year and d.c. leaders gathered to break ground -- ground for a new park. >> you can almost hear chuck brown's music in the air. for decades his go-go tunes were played on this small stage in the park. >> three, two, one. >> all right. >> the park is now known as chuck brown memorial park and district officials along with brown family broke ground on what will soon stand as a tribute to his musical legacy. >> remember it ain't got a thing if it ain't got the go-go swing.
>> all right. >> i used to come and bring my grandkids. >> bernice says thinking about chuck brown brings her happiness. >> when i went to the first go-go it was in the northwest garden and at that time it was chuck brown and soul searchers and the song was we the people and we just loved that song. we just partied so hard that night. >> many of the neighbors say since the 1970s people have come here to listen to music in this small amphitheater. the original plan when making this the chuck brown park was to really expand the amphitheater but residents in the area complained worried about traffic and crowd issues so that project was scaled down. >> in this case the community spoke and they were listened to and heard and so we did modify the design approach to a more passive design.

anything showing up on radar but temperatures are dropping up to our north. here's where our frontal boundary is. the frontal boundary is sliding through our area right now. we may see that touching off a shower or storm but we will be rewarded after it gets down south with a bit of a temperature drop. look at chicago. 11 degrees cooler than they were 24 hours ago. >> detroit cooler. binghamton cooler. that's what's going to be sinking through. that drier cooler air lags behind the front by a number of hours i wanted to show you it is able to produce showers and storms through the pittsburgh area. hagerstown wouldn't be surprised if this holds together and affects you later tonight and also out through ohio. perhaps more energy may ride down in our direction. closer look at showers and storms. not seeing as much lightening as i was. i think they'll start weakening out. certainly nothing severe. as the frontal boundary passes
by later tonight and during the morning hours it's possible it could still produce a shower or a storm along the front. best chance i think west central virginia down through southern maryland and maybe a rumble of thunder but guess what? it is going eventually push south of us and we're going to see a beautiful weekend with lots of sunshine, sunshine park b on -- parking on top of us. check out the futurecast. i wanted you to see what we're seeing. at 11 clock catching those showers coming out of pittsburgh and then it tries to even keep some together out here through western maryland and the panned handle of west virginia. tomorrow morning it spins storms down south during the afternoon hours and then we see the frontal system clearing. so it has this model in particular has been slowing down the passage of the frontal boundary by a little bit so we'll take that into consideration with our forecast. 72 a shower possible around the front and that's why you'll see
